Visiting Families

The same families came to Ring on holiday every year to the same cottages in the village for 1-2 months, Madigans from Limerick came to Mary Hayes on the main Rd., Bother na Sop, Lennons from Carlow stayed at John Careys, the 1st house down the boreen, McSweeney from Cappoquin stayed at Mary Kenneally, I’ve forgotten the name of the people from Lismore came to Pats and Eily Cuddihys, a Dublin family stayed at Thomas and Mary Maher, Foleys from Ferry Bank stayed first at Murty Halleys and later at Skuce’s, Donal Foley wrote a book called the 3 villages, lots of visitors came to Mageen Walsh guest house but not families. All these people who took in summer visitors had old houses to move into while the visitors stayed in the Gaeltact houses.

Most of the visitors who came to Ring each summer went to classes in the collage to learn the Irish language

Miss Redmond from Waterford came to stay in Fuchsia cottage in Helvick every summer, she tried to buy the cottage but Mr Moyihinan, ( he had a title something like commissionaire) I think he was from the Co. Council wouldn’t sell it.

The coast guard houses in Helvick were 2nd homes to some Dungarvan business people, Mr. Mulcahy the draper shop had one, Paddy Joe Morrissey the solicitor had one
