Thomas Phelan

A friend of mine has near exhausted his search or confirmation of the Gentleman pictured, Thomas Phelan...he submits the following information..
.This is a photo, from a Mortuary Card, much enlarged.
He was a Thomas Phelan. He died  acc to the card on the 21st April 1921.
That is all that I am certain of, the card was among my mother's "papers"
and I found it after she had died (1993)
I have never been able to discover if he was one of the local(Ring/Dungarvan
area) family of Phelans, which is quite likely since she had it in her
prayer book along with many, many others.
But, since she also had one's for Thomas Ashe , Cathal Brugha, Padraig
Pearse et al, it is also likely that he was a Volunteer Martyr, as she saw
him (Note the uniform and year of death?)
I also wondered , because of that, if he could have been the Thomas WHELAN
(Same name basically)isn't it ?) , a Galway Man who was executed by the
British, in Mountjoy on the 14th March 1921 in connection with the "Bloody
Sunday" assassinations by Collins'men and Dublin Brigade IRA ?
I have read also that that Whelan, who was hanged as a criminal, was WELL
KNOWN in Ring ? ? The Court Martial refused to hear evidence of an Alibi
that should have sparede his life.

Maybe someone who reads and views your "Blog" may be able to cast some light
on the matter.
