The 14 Munroe Challenge

Pictured is Anthony Whelan, left (Abbeyside) and John Corroon (Westmeath) on the summit of Carrauntoohil during the Concern 14 Munroe challenge. The team managed to climb 8 of the country's highest 14 mountains over 2 days but had to abandon the attempt in interest of group safety due to terrible weather. Anthony managed to raise €1595 .
Anthony, is Son of Tom Whelan from Ring and his mother is Marion nee Hyslop.The family now live at Abbeyside tough Tom's extended family continue to live at an Rinn.

The group raised a fantastic €8640 which went towards helping children in Africa to gain access to an education. In Africa, a child is 40% more likely to live beyond their fifth birthday if their mother has a primary school education. It’s that basic. Education is a human right. It’s also a key factor in reducing poverty and child labour.

General Liam Lynch Commemoration

It was a showery evening on the Knockmealdown Mountains.. the Monument on the slopes marks the spot where some eighty - six years ago, Liam Lynch, Chief of Staff of the Irish republican Army was killed in the final days of the civil war. In his final hours as he lay dying, a friendship of sorts developed between Lynch and the Free State Army officer, Lieutenant Larry Clancy. Both had been comrades in the war for Independence, it is indeed ironic that Clancy eventually captured the Republican hero...

The featured speaker was Tommy McKearney, one of the leading figures in the Campaign agains British Rule in Ireland. He spent 53 day on Hunger Strike in 1980, until the strike was called off. He had spent sixteen years in Prison. Tommy’s three brothers lost their lives in the fight for freedom from British rule. He is now a well respected journalist and an organiser with the Indepentent workers union.

I suppose that General Lynch, who was just 29 years old was the 'Last man standing' hope you enjoy the pictures...not Waterford mind you, we crossed the border into Tipperary. Click on the images to enlarge


























What is interesting about this picture is; The kids were throwing stones in the river while the man on the bridge was fishing!
