Daniel Harrington and the fighting Irish.

I carried out some research for Daniel Harrington who got in touch with me some time back Re: his Terry’s. Since then Daniel made a visit to Dungarvan and Ring, where we placed his people. Sadly, I was attending Hospital in Cork and missed him when he visited.

But he left me a cap at the Museum! and requested that I have a photo taken with cap on!  This is unusual for me...but here is the picture

The story behind the cap that Daniel presented me with was that his great grandfather on his father’s side, Daniel Harrington emigrated to America in 1853 at 20 years of age.  He joined the Union army in 1861 and was in the Irish brigade. He served in several major battles including, Gettysburg, and several other important battles, He had never really known much about his grandfather Daniel F Harrington. However, Daniel was at Gettysburg with his wife, Susan several years ago and driving by the Irish Brigade gift store, he just had to stop, He was drawn to the Hats and had to have one. Mind you it was later that he found out about his grandfather’s history. Since then he has carried out research on the Irish Brigade and have come to be quite enthralled by the Irish Brigade and indeed his grandfather. The sad thing was that he went thru all the battles and died five months after the end of the war in Washington D.C. from typhoid fever.

Dan keeps up to speed with my Blogs (Sadly I’m behind owning to other commitments!) So, says Dan ‘I’d love to see a picture of you wearing it’. And that is why there is a rare photo of me here on this Blog wearing the hat of the ‘Irish Brigade’ I also put Dan in touch with Eamon Terry in An Rinne and he reports that ‘We had a great visit with Eamonn as well, he was fascinating and we enjoyed his showing us what an artist he is with the crystal not sure were related but I felt an instant connection to him. I'd love to hear more about my family and wish we had been able to visit longer; maybe we can make it over again sometime.  I hope to keep in touch, and as my grandmother would say,"Dias Mura Dhuit.
